About meWhen we meet and talk to people, this may seem very disorganised: we leave sentences half finished, constantly correct ourselves, or suddenly fall silent. But if we take a closer look, we see that our all these hiccups are actually highly organised: we're always following unspoken rules, and we notice when we or others break those rules. As a conversation analyst, I study how people use language and non-verbal tools such as gaze and gestures to create order, and to understand what the rules are.
I currently study how apps like Skype are used in primary care for video consultations as part of a research project on Remote-by-Default Care during the COVID-19 pandemic. My main interests are how physical examinations can be done over video, and how patients and clinicians solve technological problems that disrupt how they hear or see each other. As part of my research I also work with Microsoft Research Cambridge, thanks to funding made available by the Higher Education and Innovation Fund. Listen to my recent interview with the Naked Scienstist on the new normal in healthcare after COVID-19, and read about our recent work on why we struggle with video calls on Dutch broadcasting RTL Nieuws. |

My ResearchOur social interactions are primarily about actions; things like greeting and inviting. My main research interest is how we use language to convey these actions.
